Project Management

Like art, challenging projects come in many shapes and sizes.  Whether it’s a complex combination of numerous artists, fragile artworks, customs clearances in countries around the world and a single, unmovable deadline or handling just one important artwork. 

Fortunately, all types of challenges are handled every day for our customers by our Project Management team.

Plain Sailing: A Major Cruise Line

We were responsible for managing the professional handling and transport of artworks from over 100 artists and galleries in 15 European countries to two enormous cruise ships.

While the ships were under construction in Pappenberg, Germany and Turku, Finland, we delivered all the European art to them and managed the local procedures for the pieces arriving from the rest of the world.  Every artwork had to be delivered on time to an exact location including:

• Life size bronze sculptures from Scotland;
• A video installation from Austria;
• Oversized glass panels from Germany;
• A stone sculpture from Portugal;
• A 17 ft bronze tree from the USA.

To ensure this, we liaised with artists, framers, customs authorities, airlines, truck drivers, overseas offices, agents, art technicians and installation crews on the ships and our client.

Our main project tasks were to pick up soft-packed art works, coordinate with framers and pack and crate the art to museum standards on site or in local depots.  We then provided secure storage for all pieces.  We supplied specialised handling equipment to transport large artworks like the oversized glass panels and managed the road, air and ocean freight requirements.

Every single item needed to be customs cleared regardless of origin.  As well as managing this we kept track of each item using a database that traced their every movement and dealt with the security requirements of single items up to $300,000 in value.
