Here is a summary of the main points of importing and exporting art.
Import and Export procedures vary for permanent and temporary imports.
Irish origin shipments being returned to Ireland.
For shipments of Irish origin being returned to Ireland, we are required to produce copies of the original export paperwork, showing the temporary procedure code on the export customs entry. Once the paperwork is matched up the shipment is brought into Ireland, VAT free. There is a possibility of a random customs examination but this is at the discretion of customs.
Exhibition shipments.
The artist or gallery in Ireland needs to apply for a ‘letter of undertaking’ from customs before the shipment can move. We liaise with customs officers who manage the customs procedures at Dublin airport and Dublin port. Once the ‘letter of undertaking’ is confirmed by customs, the shipment can be imported.
Treated packaging.
Most countries require all wood used in packaging to be treated. We can help advise on which treatment is needed for a specific country.
Custom formalities.
Export procedures vary for permanent and temporary exports.
For permanent exports, the normal customs entry with permanent export procedure code applies.
For temporary exports, shipments will be sent ex Dublin using the Temporary Customs Procedure Code on customs entry. In this way, shipments can be matched up on their return to Dublin, if not sold at exhibition, and no VAT is paid on their return.
